Current Water Conditions

The Little Truckee remains clear, cold, and technical, but low flows have tightened the fishing window. Flows are sitting at 52 CFS between Stampede and Boca, so the best action is from first light until around noon. With water this low, trout are on edge—stealthy approaches and accurate casts are essential. Afternoon fishing puts extra stress on these fish, so mornings are the time to be there.

Water Temperatures

Thanks to consistent cold releases, temps hold in the mid-50s°F all day, rarely exceeding 56°F. While this keeps bugs active, trout activity slows in the afternoons under low-flow conditions.

Hatches

PMDs continue to dominate, with the strongest hatch between 9am and 2pm. Midges are still in the mix, and breezy afternoons bring hoppers into play.

Effective Tactics

Dry fly fishing is rewarding for those who can deliver a clean drift. Hopper-dropper rigs work mid-morning, while tightline nymphing in deeper runs remains productive. Long leaders (14 feet) and fine tippet (7x) are critical for these spooky fish.

Catch Report

Most trout are running 14–18”, with some trophy browns over 20” taking well-presented dries in the early morning or evening. This is highly technical water that rewards patience and precision.
