Troutfest has arrived, and thanks to a nice, big stock, fishing should be quite good!
Whether you’re participating in the event or just doing some trout fishing for fun this weekend, you’ll want to focus on shallower water than you might expect. The fish are hanging fairly close to shore, which is good news for those of you who are landlocked. Bank anglers will want to post up between Windy Point and North Shore Landing or near Juniper Point and make a shorter cast than your instincts are telling you to. First thing in the morning it could be worth throwing some spoons or spinners to pick off high-roaming fish, but as the sun rises switching to carolina rigs with Mice Tails, Powerbaits, or inflated nightcrawlers will be your best bet.
Boaters should also keep out of the depths this weekend. Move in toward the 5mph bouys and do some trolling or drifting. Start somewhere between the observatory and Windy Point and work west toward North Shore Landing or east toward Juniper Point. If you get bit, stay with them, don’t just continue on your route. Circle back through instead. While the sun is still low, keep your bait and lures in the top 5 feet of the water column. As the day progresses, drop down to around the 10 foot mark.
Have fun out there, and good luck to everyone this weekend!
