Current Water Conditions

On the Truckee River, flows have continued to settle this week, sitting at 76 CFS out of Tahoe City, 90 CFS through town, and 492 CFS at Farad. With the lighter flows up top, trout are shifting further downriver toward the canyon. The canyon stretch has been fishing best, particularly in the cool, calm mornings before the sun rises high. Weekday angler pressure has been light, giving you plenty of room to work the runs.

Water Temperatures

Upper 50s at first light, warming to about 60 in the afternoon. With cooler fall days settling in, expect temps to steadily decline.

Hatches

Sparse activity with only a few sporadic blue-winged olives.

Effective Tactics

Tightline nymphing through riffles and seams is producing well. Dry-dropper rigs with long leaders are also effective in mixed currents. Lighter leaders paired with a 10-foot rod will help in these lower flows. Browns are holding close to wood and rock, while rainbows are sitting comfortably in riffles and runs.

Catch Report

Anglers are finding plenty of rainbows and browns in the 12–16" class from Glenshire through Hirschdale. Bigger browns pushing 18–19" are coming out of the deeper canyon pools. Best bite remains early and late.
