It’s been a couple of weeks since the last trout plant in the Upper Kern, but CDFW is expected to return any day now. Stockings usually happen at the easy access points, so if you’re chasing planters, that’s the best place to start. Anglers have been finding trout in eddies and river bends along the 20-mile stretch, with catches coming on salmon eggs, trout jigs, and black/gold Panther Martins. Fly anglers are also connecting with fish using attractor patterns. In the Lower Kern, trout are being caught in the canyon up to Keysville with jigs and spinners. Bass anglers are picking up both largemouth and smallmouth on small plastics, Get Bent Baits, and spinnerbaits. Catfish action remains steady on nightcrawlers, chicken liver, and cut bait. As of this report, flows were 284 CFS on the Upper Kern at Kernville and 416 CFS on the Lower Kern.
