One week away from the Pyramid Lake opener

We are now one week away from the Pyramid Lake opener and things appear to be lining up well for another epic season out there. As the season kicks off, anglers will find the best success getting out on a boat or a float tube and fishing deep using large streamers imitating the main baitfish, Tui Chubs. The use of fish finders will help you locate the bait balls of these fish and therefore the Cutthroat hanging below them. In case you didn’t already know, we do now carry the Garmin Striker Cast GPS - order one this weekend so we can be sure to get it to you for the opener!
 
It usually isn’t until the end of October before the shore bite out here begins but depending on what the weather does over the next few weeks, there’s a good chance it may begin sooner this year. If heading out here for the opener festivities next week, be sure to have an 8-9 weight rod with a fast sinking line and some large streamers imitating the chub.
 
The streamers should vary a bit in weight to be able to get different sink rates depending on where the trout are feeding. It is not uncommon to use flies tied on ¼ oz. jig heads and 3-6 inches long. 20 pound fluoro is also recommended when fishing this way. We are beyond excited to get out here and chase the world’s biggest cutthroat once again this year.

Please know that we are continuing to work diligently on increasing our selection of Pyramid Lake specific gear for this winter and have all of the rods, reels, lines, nets, and flies that you need for out here (except ¼ oz. jig flies.. those you’ll need to tie yourself, you crazy animals!).
 
We are also set to get some custom patterns here in the shop, consisting of some of our most productive midge patterns from last year. Just like your never-ending pursuit of that world record cutthroat, we are working hard in the pursuit of having the single best selection of gear to target them, so stay tuned!
