Fishing in late August is showing some promise, with a large body of mixed yellowfin and bluefin tuna, spiced with a few paddy-loads of dorado and yellowtail, providing most of the offshore excitement for the multi-day fleet.
Most of the boats were in over the weekend, offloading fish of 20 to 30 pounds from the area 120 to 150 or more miles south. Guadalupe Island and Alijos Rocks remain the source of tuna over 50 pounds, but neither has been wildly productive over the past two or three days. Wahoo are moving in on The Rocks, however, and fishing on the Ridge remains very good. Look for the next couple of months to continue the improving trend.
The photo here shows a nice bluefin tuna caught on Excel's latest Brad Merritt charter.
