DELTA
Well, the 69th Annual Bass Derby is now history and congrats go out to the lucky winners, Andy Douens of Oakley who caught a 291” striped bass, the exact target length , to claim the $1000 first prize followed by Michael Allen of Antioch who hooked a 47.96” sturgeon to claim a prize of $500 and Donald Jefferies of Colfax who claimed $500 for the largest salmon at 23 1/4 pounds. Conditions were perfect this year with very little wind and warm temperatures. Incidentally most of the winning fish were caught during the night time hours, mainly at anchor tossing threadfin shed, mudsuckers, eel and fresh salmon roe. The host of the event was the Isleton Chapter of the California Striped Bass Association. The fishing was best off Sherman Island, Decker Island and Broad Slough. The best sturgeon fishing took place under The Powerlines and most of the king salmon came from the Rio Vista Bridge to the ferry slip on trolled, double-bladed Silvertron and Willow spinners with either red or chartreuse beads. The Randy Pringle Open Bass Derby took place out on the Delta with the winning team taking home $20,000 for a 2 day total of 44 pounds. With an entry fee of $200 the event drew 199 participants for the 2 day event.

SALT WATER
With the salmon fishing season closing October 31, the season limps along with very little to show for it. Only 1 charter boat ventured out to record 4 salmon to 22 pounds for 10 anglers. They claim that most of the salmon for the Fall run have already moved through the bay and into their natal streams, primarily the Sacramento River. Meanwhile the rock fishing is yielding 10 fish limits from Monterey to Bodega Bay with a sprinkling of cabazone and lingcod. Another option is the whale watching cruise to the Farallon Islands operated by the Oceanic Society of San Francisco.

SAN FRANCISCO BAY
The only thing going on in San Francisco Bay is the exceptional leopard shark fishing, with a number of seven gill sharks mixed in, the bay is really quiet with the exception of a few salmon taken off California City at the top of the high tides. There are still plenty of undersized striped bass in the North bay and that’s a good sign for better things to take place.

RIVERS
On the American River steelhead to 8 pounds scattered from Paradise Beach to Upper Sunrise, but very few salmon. The Feather River is a bonanza, especially at the Thermolito Afterbay Outlet Hole, where kings are stacked. Some say the bite is so good the guides are making 3 trips a day. Salmon are also found in good numbers at the rock wall near Gridley. Further up the Sacramento River, the famous Barge Hole, south of Battle Creek and the old mouth are choked full of salmon that arrived last week. The best action is coming from roe and jigs and the salmon are big running from 14 to 40 pounds as a rule. 2 fish limits are not uncommon.
TAKE TIME TO GO OUT AND ENJOY THE GREAT OUTDOORS. STAY SAFE TO FISH ANOTHER DAY. BE SURE TO CHECK WEATHER CONDITIONS BEFORE HEADING OUT INTO THE BIG WATERS. UNTIL NEXT TIDE.

Chris Lauritzen Fish Report
10-6-2016
Did I ever tell you that the month of October is my most favorite month of the entire year? I like October the most because of all of pretty leaves on trees announcing that fall is coming. I like the warm days and the cooler nights for sleeping. I like the fact that on most days the wind dies down to barely a breathe of air movement both at the coast and here in the west delta. I like putting on a wool...... Read More
