Pelagic rep Sonny Jones weighed a cow at 212 pounds in front of H&M Landing January 19, following a trip with skipper Andy Cates on the Red Rooster III.
"Last year I was the only guy who didn't get a 200-pounder on this trip," he said. "This year I was the only one who did get a cow."
Sonny's bovine tuna came on a squid under the kite. He said he used a 10/0 Mustad 7691 hook, 130-pound Izorline and 130-pound Jerry Brown Line One Spectra backing on a Penn 70 VSW reel and a Baja Boomer rod.
"It was the first fish we caught off Puerto Vallarta," said Sonny. "I got him in 20 minutes."
Jones won first place. Bob Michener of Oxnard won second place for a 180-pounder. David Malmberg of Leucadia won third place for a 168.9-pound tuna.
Mark Kazmac of New York City got one of several nice snappers that were included in the catch. He posed with the red fish, called a Pargo Colorada in southern waters.
"We had two really great days on the bank there," said skipper Cates, "and then on the third day, we got blown off. Too much wind to anchor, so we headed north. But most of the fish we got there on two great days of fishing were over 100 pounds."
