FREE FISHING DAY – Saturday, September 2, 2017
A cloudy day at the Lake for the eclipse – but it looks like the backcountry may have gotten a bit of a dusting – could it be another 2016-2017 winter? Had a few ThunderBoomers and showers come thru last week and they’re still in the forecast for this week. The Lake stopped spilling last Thursday, but we are just below spill.

Catching remained on the good side this week. Fish the Inlets with MiceTails, NightCrawlers, PowerBait or Jigs. Troll with LeadCore line – about 5 colors – and a NeedleFish or troll a Red & Gold Thomas Buoyant, Flashers and a NightCrawler or just a NightCrawler (don’t forget the swivel) is producing good results. Drift NightCrawlers or PowerBait around the rock piles is also being fruitful or should that be fishful. Still not much shore fishing except from the dam as the Lake is still on the full side. If you’re fishing off the dam use Lures, NightCrawlers or MiceTails. Got fish on Friday.

Cris Rieks had a BIG smile when he pulled in a 3-1/4 pounder on a Lure (couldn’t remember which Lure tho’ as they caught so many fish). Emin also landed a 3-1/4 RainBow on a NightCrawler. Christopher Blandart (11 years old) brought in a nice 2-3/4 pound fish using RainBow PowerBait.

We did get some ThunderBoomer and sprinkles during the past week and it looks like we might get a bit more – sort of sounds like last week’s report, doesn’t it. DON’T FORGET YOUR RAINGEAR AND A JACKET. ThunderBoomers are in the forecast thru Wednesday, then it looks like we might be drying up a bit. Temps look to be in the mid-60s during the forecasted ThunderBoomers period and increase to the mid-70s by the weekend. Lows temps look to be in the low-40s and upper 30s at the beginning of the week and increase to the mid-40s by the weekend.  You can check out the weather forecast according to Howard our local weather ‘guesser’ at www.MammothWeather.com. You can also check out www.weather.gov – enter Aspendell, CA (which is the little community right below Lake Sabrina) in the search field and you’ll get the forecast for at the higher elevation. You may need to scroll down on the webpage to see the temps.

The cafe (and only the cafe) will be closed September 22-24, 2017
The Store will be open AND Boat Rentals will be available.

Keeping this info on the report:
It’s a pet peeve of mine that if you catch a big fish or a limit just to have your picture taken for the webpage and then try and give your fish away – we won’t post your picture, but then again we may post it as ‘WASTER OF A PERFECTLY GOOD FISH TO EAT’! Crimp down your barbs, take a picture on the boat and release it for another day.

Still big issues with skeeters, when using the bug juice, try not to get it on your hands – you’ll transfer it to your bait and the fish just don’t like bug juice or sunscreen or lotion or cologne or perfume. Wash your hands in the stream or Lake to get it off, and then use some fish attractant on your hands. If you’re coming to the Lake, don’t forget sunscreen and dark glasses –the snow and sun makes it pretty bright against the blue sky. DON’T FORGET THAT JACKET.

People, sure would be nice if y’all would pick up your trash when you leave. It’s really not that hard. Just sayin! If you need something to put it in, come into the store and we’ll give you a bag.

If you’re hiking, stay safe out there. Remember to leave a note about your destination and approximate return time and a clothing description. And you might want to hike with a buddy. Too many search and rescues this year.

Fishing etiquette is becoming a bit of a problem at the Lake and we don’t like problems. If you come upon someone fishing, please don’t fish right next to them – take a bit of a hike farther down and don’t cast over into their spot. Same at the Inlet, there are so many areas to fish on this Lake go find another ‘soon to be’ favorite spot.

Safe travels.
