There are still steelhead available in the Trask throughout April, although it can get tough to fish if it gets too low. This is mostly a wild fish river, although some hatchery strays are caught. Float fishing jigs, beads, or bait, drift fishing, nymphing, and swinging flies or spinners are all good techniques.
Anglers are reminded that the North and South Forks of the Trask closed to steelhead fishing on April 1, to protect spawning wild steelhead and out migrating juveniles.
No reports of spring Chinook yet, and we really don’t expect much to go on until near the end of the month. That said, I’m sure we will hear of the first one caught well before that.
