Alamo Lake (report courtesy of Alamo Lake State Park Ranger Drew Collett) has been experiencing “mini monsoons” on a regular basis and as a result, the fishing has been sporadic. Nevertheless, when it’s good, it’s really good! The morning bass bite has been great, and anglers are hooking into some plus size fish. Six largemouth over 6 pounds were reported in the last week from areas near the Cholla Launch Ramp. According to the anglers surveyed at the lake, the morning largemouth bite has been decent by the dam from gray light until 6:30 a.m. Around 10 a.m. they pick back up and are actively biting a variety of baits. Drop shot mini creature baits, baitfish-colored lipless crankbaits and chatterbaits were mentioned as the most productive currently for Alamo Lake bass. There are few reports from the river side of the lake.

Crappie fishing at Alamo has been decent the last two weeks. Most of the larger fish have been caught at night using light bars off the side of the boat. Catfish are being caught regularly from shore using nightcrawlers. They aren’t very deep right now -- use a bobber to keep your worm just above the lake bottom. The park store is currently out of bait but was due to be replenished around mid-month. Minnows will be available October 1.
