This week’s abnormally warm weather made for some excellent fishing on the Truckee. We are lucky to still have great flows thanks to last year’s big winter, and the river has been in excellent shape. We have been getting a fair amount of phone calls about water clarity on the Truckee over the last week or two, and we think a big part of this is due to the reports for some of the steelhead fisheries up north that have been getting a lot more precipitation than us. Unlike the rivers up north the Truckee has been running nice and clear for the entire winter thus far, and even with this weeklong storm, it should still be in great shape.

Access will become the biggest challenge over the next week, but areas like Floriston or Farad should have some open parking during the storm, as these freeway exits are maintained by Caltrans, and are a bit lower elevation. The entire Nevada side will also remain accessible and the fishing down here has been great, especially out east, where there have been good hatches of baetis in a size 16, making for some great dry-fly fishing around mid-day.

The upper river at Glenshire bridge has seen some fair dry fly fishing as well, with the main bug here being midges instead of BWO’s. For your midge imitations, we recommend fishing a size 20-22 and using 6x with the current clarity. If no hatches are present, the BWO nymph or midge larva with certainly get the job done. After we begin to see a few days of snow, start mixing in some larger bugs, such as stones and worms. We would recommend putting a particular emphasis on fishing worm patterns this week.
