San Pablo Reservoir Outing

San Pablo Reservoir - El Sobrante, CA (Contra Costa County)

Paul Clouse and Al Hurwitz trolled San Pablo Reservoir extensively on July 11, 2024. We used a variety of lures trolled 20-25 feet below the surface. These included Streamer Flies, Rapala Husky Jerk Hard Baits, Kastmasters, Speedy Shiners, and Panther Martin Spinners. We applied scent to the lures. The very warm weather forced us off the lake around 12:30PM. It was a very tough day. We were only able to catch one Mt. Lassen Rainbow Trout, weighing about 3/4-1 pound. The fish was caught in the southern part of the reservoir in the middle of the lake, while reeling in a 1/6 oz. Speedy Shiner.

There were fewer than 10 fish images seen on the sonar unit during our entire outing. This was likely due to the fact that the fish were very scattered in the lake and also  running deep below the surface to avoid the heat. The surface water temperature ranged from 75-78 degrees, and the lake clarity was only fair. These conditions make it difficult for trollers, and we think people using live or synthetic bait will have greater success right now. Once there is a cooling trend and with improved water clarity, trollers should be more successful, particularly in  going after the various Bass species, including Spotted and Largemouth Bass.

We want to give special thanks to the dock staff who were extremely helpful in getting us on and off the water.

All the best,
Paul Clouse, Lafayette
Dr. Al Hurwitz, Saratoga
