The Truckee River is currently flowing out of Lake Tahoe at a rate of 140 CFS. As fall arrives, water temperatures will decrease, especially at night. In the town of Truckee, the flow is at 124 CFS, and it increases below Donner Creek to 227 CFS. Further downriver, the lower Truckee River is flowing at 454 CFS. A cooling trend is expected in the area for next week. The fall season is the time of year when brown trout start preparing for spawning, so there is currently a reaction bite now in the lower section of the Truckee River.
Tips for the Week
As summer comes to a close, streamer fishing has been picking up on the Truckee River. The best time for targeting larger Truckee River trout while streamer fishing is in the morning. Anglers should fish behind the structures and in the deeper pools. Additionally, nymphing with crawdad patterns in the deeper pools is also proving to be rewarding for catching larger trout. There are some current hatches of blue-winged olives, pale morning duns, and caddis occurring in the evening, starting as early as 6pm.
Suggested Flies or Lures
With multiple tactics to try on the Truckee River right now, some favorites to try this week are Black Pats Rubber Legs Size 8, Hadden’s Green Crayfish, PT nymph size 16, White streamers, Elk Hair Cadis, Grass Hoppers in Tan and Green, E/C Caddis, Zebra Midges, or Mercer’s Brown Crayfish.
