Crane Prairie is probably our favorite lake as of late. Make sure to bring a variety of flies—balanced leeches, chironomids, callibaetis, two-bits, zebra midges, ice cream cones, and San Juans are all producing well. Stripping flies on an intermediate line is an effective way to cover water and hook into fish. Don’t overlook using a big foam dry like a Chubby Chernobyl; some opportunistic fish are definitely rising for it. Damsels and boatman could also present some good top water opportunities as well. Access to Crane is still open despite the fires, but be sure to check for any updates before you head out, as conditions can change quickly.
