The flow from Island Park Dam is less than a third of the average flow for this time of year. It makes things very challenging on the slow sections of the river like the Harriman Park. Faster sections, like the Box Canyon, are much easier to wade and fish water that is normally very difficult to get to. The autumn fishing has been hampered by air temperatures well above average but that changed a few days ago. The insect hatches have really picked up and we expect good fishing over the week ahead. We’ve been getting decent hatches of Blue Winged Olives which we expect to continue over the next few weeks. We’re also still seeing good numbers of Mahogany Duns. My favorite dry flies for the Ranch and the tailwater stretch from Ashton to St. Anthony are Visa Dun, Quigley’s Hackle Stacker, and No hackle. You will also need some emergers like BWO Biot Emerger and Bat Wing Emerger in size 18 and 20.
