Ice is covering ~ 80% of Comins Lake. Ice thickness varies from 3 to 6.5 inches, with areas of exposed water.  All ice should be considered unsafe.

The north lake has had open water as recently as 12/4/24 with anglers actively fishing from shore.  If anglers attempt to fish from shore, a mix of spinners, nightcrawlers, PowerBait, and a fly behind a bubble should catch fish.  Trout are ranging from 8 to 18 inches. With warm days and cold nights, ice should be able to maintain current thicknesses.  Anglers should use safety equipment (ice cleats, picks, etc.), especially during the early ice season. Anglers fishing through the ice will do well jigging with nightcrawlers, PowerBait, and a variety of flashy spinners and spoons.

Comins received 10,043 rainbow trout averaging 8.9 inches this fall. Approximately, 8,400 brown trout averaging 10.4 inches were also stocked. During northern pike suppression efforts this fall, rainbow trout were observed in the 1.5-to-4 pound range. There is a limited bluegill fishery at Comins Lake and anglers are encouraged to release bluegill in order to better establish their population.

Please note that NDOW has placed radio tags in several northern pike. Any pike over 24 inches in length that have transmitters can be removed from the lake. These pike will have an orange floy tag near their dorsal fin and a small antenna (~ 7 inches long) coming from their stomach.  Please return these fish to the water for research purposes.
