Our friend Don came into the shop this evening wearing waders (always a good sign) and said there were a lot of little black stonefly’s hatching the last few days on the Metolius. Fish will eat this little hatch quite well so add some 16-18 black elk hair Caddis to the selection for the next 2 or 3 weeks. Look for BWO’s, Midges, Silver Stripe Sedge and October Caddis to also be in the hatch mix and remember to match the whole cycle’s of these bugs. Nymphs, emergers, adults… usually nymphs will be the best.

This can be an important hatch in January on the Metolius, and in February (usually later February) on the Middle Deschutes.

By the way, afternoon midge hatches were bringing up some fish at the Fall River this week, according to our friend Jesse who makes our super cool FFP belts. The next couple of days are going to be very very crappy to get over to the Fall. But next week will be good.

So far the Crooked River remains high at over 900 cfs and is unfishable at this time I believe.

Just a quick update for the New Year.
