"We got ???em good on kelps going down and again coming back up the line," said Red Rooster III skipper Andy Cates at H&M Landing August 19.

"We fished at the Benitos Islands, but the seals were pretty bad there. Yesterday evening we had a late hit on the albacore that worked out fine."

Richard Hemphill of La Mesa won first place for a 39.4-pound albacore. "I got it in about 15 minutes," he said.

Richard fished a sardine on a 4/0 Gamakatsu hook with 40-pound Izorline, a Pro Gear Oceanus reel and a Calstar 970 rod.

Lorin Brackett of Westminster won second place for a 38.7-pound longfin, and 15-year-old Matthew Grollman of Hermosa Beach won third place for a 36.4-pounder. He said he goes to Hermosa Valley School, where he plays water polo, soccer and baseball.

Preston Roan of Santa Barbara won the trolling jackpot for a 345-pound albacore, and sat in with the winners for a lineup photo.
