Forty percent of the West Basin is iced over, but the east side is wide open and that’s where the fish are. Wait for the sun to get up a little -it helps keep the line from freezing to your reel.

Clarity has improved to about 9 ft. depending where you are. Surface temps have dipped to the mid 30s. Canyon Dam is the best public ramp with a dock still in place, and it’s a great place to start your trolling. Lots of fish all over the sonar from Canyon Dam to Rocky Point.

Find action no deeper than 20 feet. Geritol Cove has rainbows and browns still hanging around as the brown trout spawn appears to have peaked. Fish are still in there looking for egg material or suspended roe near the bottom and also, chartreuse Power Bait floated up about 20 inches up off the bottom. Use a #12 hook and work it from the weed line into deeper water. Rainbows love Power Bait this time of year. Doug Neal: (530) 258-6732 http://www.almanorfishingadventures.com
