Improving koke bite gives Shaver hope
Shaver Lake - Shaver Lake, CA (Fresno County)

Shaver Lake fishing remains slow but the good news is the kokanee bite has picked up some. Dick Nichols, of Dick's Fishing Charters said that 2 to 5 kokanee per trip is possible, but the trout bite is very slow. The kokes just started showing up this week. The majority of us having any success have been fishing at about 45 feet, however, we did pick up a couple at 67 and 72 feet deep in front of the island. Orange or pink Apex or a Pink Koke Busters, all tipped with shopeg corn behind a Captain Jack's C.J. Dodger has been working for me and a farmer from Exeter who scored 5 kokanee on Thursday. In front of the island and the Point have produced most of our fish. The trout have been very spotty. One here and one there. I have fished most of the lake each day for the past 2 weeks and have found the trout bite to get worse and worse. So, while the trout bite is off, the smallmouth bass bite is red hot. Crickets or spinner near rocks around the lake is a heaven for the little bass. Some to 1.5 pounds have been caught over the past 2 weeks. Bank fishing is really hit or miss. Trout dough bait or crawlers are the best choice. The dam, roads 1 and 2 or near the Tunnel Creek area are best. The lake has dropped slightly. The surface water temperature lowered to 68 degrees with last weeks storm but is now back to about 70 degrees.
