Chris Cruger of San Diego charter-mastered a five-day American Angler excursion that arrived at Pt. Loma Sportfishing September 22. Brian Kiyohara was skipper for the trip.
"The variables that we deal with fishing always seem to be changing, read the boat's report for September 20. "My old boss Steve Loomis used to say, ???as soon as you think you have it figured out, it changes 180 degrees,' and we live with this quote on a daily basis. Our timing weather wise and fishing wise was as good as we could've asked for. Once again we had a nice day of fishing for quality fish with many of them 50 to 90 pounds and two fish weighing over 100. Everyone on the boat ended up with at least one big one to go with other school-grade fish."
Steve Powell of Monrovia won first place in the jackpot for a 107.5-pound yellowfin tuna he bagged with a sardine on a 4/0 Super Mutu hook. He fished with 50-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon leader and 60-pound Line One Spectra on a Penn 12 modified by Cal Sheets and Larry "Cofe" Coffeen. His rod was a Super Seeker 6470.
Walt Nakamura of Hawthorne won second place for a 106-pounder and Mass Kosaka of Valencia took third place for his 103.5-pound Guadalupe Island yellowfin tuna.
