Got out on the Pond (Lake Powell) yesterday to check out the boat and fly-fish and some trolling to test the bite and current water temps (47 degrees). Caught my first ever Gizzard Shad on a Stripped Clauser Minnow Fly as I was graphing schools of fish in 23’ of water in the back of Warm Creek. I snagged this one and they are a good fighter like their body design would indicate. I would put them on par with a Trigger fish. I was imagining I had a 5lb. plus striper too!
After 50 more casts, I switched over to trolling a deep running shad (15-20’) Game on as I nailed 3 within 2 hours in the 3-6 lb. class. Let me quote my friend and “Guru” of this fishery in agreement “That we haven’t had this quality to fish health in decades. I mean they have been good with a certain percentage to a day’s catch, but these fish now, Lake wide are 100 %ers (fat and twice as strong).
This coming season, I suspect the stringers won’t be always as full, but the thickness and fight will more than make up for the quantity. The light tackle angler to any form of fishing will not be disappointed.
The other great news? This year’s snowpack should insure another super bait fish spawn.
Capt. Bill is excited beyond measure!
