Pelican Lake is nearing full at this time. Inflows have slowed to 20 cubic feet per second and the edges are solid. Ice ranges from 14 to 20 inches thick and the snow is 3 to 4 inches deep with some areas of drifting. You can park in two locations on the Highway 88 side of the lake as well as the main boat ramp area. The sportsman's access was drifted in with no recent tracks through it. Fishing for bass has picked up, there was an afternoon bite today for several hours. Target fish in 8-11 feet of water off weed bed edges. Large schools of smaller bluegill are abundant, with a few bigger fish showing up. You must find weed edges or weed beds to find the fish. If you are fishing a muddy bottom, you are fishing in the desert and will likely not be as successful. Carp will come around in smaller schools and can be targeted on the same ice jigs used for bluegill. When fishing for carp, add extra mealworms to your hooks.
Pelican Tagged Carp Project: We do have some tagged carp swimming in Pelican Lake that could be worth a $100 cash prize. We encourage you to help with long-term carp management and bring your family and friends out to target carp using all legal methods of take. If you catch/bowfish a carp with a pink tag in it, please keep the tag and go to the website listed on the tag. Your tag could be worth some cash. Please call the DWR Vernal office at 435-781-9453 if you have questions about tagged carp.
