The trout action in the Upper Kern has been steady all winter long with plants going in almost weekly. Riverside Park to Powerhouse #3 remains one of the best sections in the Upper Kern. Moving up the river within the 20-mile stretch, anglers have had success with a mix of stocked, holdover and wild trout. Trout anglers are fooling fish with salmon eggs, minijigs, and spinners. Fly anglers have done well with various nymphs and streamers. The Upper Kern River was stocked this week in the following sections: Section 4, Powerhouse #3 to Riverside Park in Kernville; Section 5, Fairview Dam to Lazy River Lodge; Section 6, Fairview Dam to Johnsondale Bridge. In the Lower Kern, trout fishing has improved after the recent plants. Trout have been coming on salmon eggs, pinched crawlers and minijigs. Lower Kern River will be stocked next week in Section 1, Democrat Beach to Lower Richbar; Section 2, Sandy Flat to Democrat Beach, and Section 3, Sandy Flat to Isabella Dam. The Bass bite is fair to good on small spinners, nightcrawlers and crankbaits. Catfish can be found in the Lower Kern on sardines, anchovies and nightcrawlers. At the time of reporting, the Upper Kern River is flowing at 683 CFS and the Lower Kern River is flowing at 413 CFS.
