The tail end of the season at the salty pond is upon us. But, with the big winter and cold spring, fishing the lake remains much better than average for mid-May. The fish are starting to seek deeper water and feed more aggressively, but you will still find a lot of fish in the shallows at this time. Cruising fish will be difficult to catch and we recommend fishing past these guys and targeting the fish out of sight just off the first shelf.
The indicator bite has slowed quite a bit, and stripping streamers with an intermediate sink line from the beach is a better option. Look for beaches with a continuous drop-off such as The Nets, Windless or Pelican. The bite has also begun to pick up on the north end of the lake again with solid reports as far north as Monument. These beaches will be best fished using a ladder to get you into deeper water. With the longer and warmer days, the bite will switch more to mornings and evenings while slowing down a bit mid-day. Since it’s getting hot out there over the next few weeks, mid-day is a good time to take a shade break and eat some lunch. Be sure to bring good sun protection this time of year, even a pop-up canopy if you have one. Also be sure to bring lots of water. The desert sun can be very intense this time of year.
