The Little Truckee has come down more than 100 CFS this week, currently holding at 530 CFS, down from 650 just two days ago. We are happy to see this continuing downward trend on our waters and things are shaping up for an exceptional summer, and an ever better fall. The current conditions on the Little Truckee are improving with the decreasing flows making for increasing holding water for the trout.

We’ve been getting the occasional report or fair dry fly fishing out here using PMD’s, BWO’s and midges. As long as the flows continue to taper off and the days continue to get warmer, we should see topwater fishing getting better and better. In the meantime, nymphing will by in large be the best way to find fish out here right now. While the amount of weight necessary out here is much more than normal, the fly selection is still par for the course on this picky tailwater, and anglers have been finding their best success on a worm or an egg pattern, paired with a PMD or BWO nymph in a size 16-18 or a midge larva in sizes 18-20, but the occasional curveball fly such as a caddis pupa, yellow sally or march brown could be the key for success when these fish have seen enough of the typical fugazis put in front of them. Due to the great water clarity our here and small flies often needed to conger up a bite, light tippet should be used, with 4x-5x providing the best results. With these larger than average flows, this will add an additional challenge when trying to land the larger fish found here and we encourage you to work hard to play the fish as quickly as possible to ensure a healthy strong fish when released.
