The river came up about 300 CFS along various sections of the river during the peak of last week’s rain, and has since begun to taper off. This didn’t make the river “blown out” but rather put a nice bit of color in the water and stirred things up a bit. This will make the larger bugs like worms, eggs and stones increasingly effective over the next few weeks. LBS (Little Black Stuff) should still very much be a part of your fly selection, especially above the confluence of Boca, where there is clearer water and lower flows. For LBS, baetis and midges will reign supreme for the next few months. So, make sure you have a good selection of these at your disposal in sizes 16-20. This increased turbidity will also make the streamer bite more effective, especially as it coincides with the brown trout going post spawn, trying to regain lost calories during spawn. Another thing this recent rain will change in the conditions on the Truckee will be water temperatures. The temps have come up 3-4 degrees with the rain and the swing of highs and lows has been far less drastic staying around 39 degrees. We suspect that this will keep fish feeding during most points of the day and should help make them a bit more active.
