Lake Del Valle Outing

Del Valle Lake - Livermore, CA (Alameda County)

Paul Clouse and Al Hurwitz trolled through all parts of Lake Del Valle on 6/6/24, looking mainly for Smallmouth Bass. While the Smallies didn’t accommodate, we did manage to catch one nice Largemouth (1.5-2.0 lbs), and three beautiful Mt. Lassen Rainbow Trout (1.5, 1.5, and 2.8 lbs). The Bass and two of the Rainbows are pictured below, including the largest Rainbow held by Al. The fish were all released.

Most of the fish were caught using Rapala Jointed Husky Jerk Hard Baits, while one Trout was caught on a 1/4 oz feathered spinner. The lures (with scent applied) were trolled 20 feet below the surface in 30-40 foot water columns.

The water surface temperature ranged from 74-77 degrees as the day warmed up. Water clarity was excellent in the northern 2/3 of the lake. The morning bite was quite good but “dried up” after noon. Not sure why the Smallmouths haven’t hit our lures yet (others have had more success), but expect them to turn on in the weeks ahead.

All in all, a good day. We’ll be back again soon to see if we can induce the Smallies to hit on the troll.
