The Little Truckee came up a bit this week, sitting at 280 CFS as of today. These flows make the dry fly fishing a bit tougher than normal, but the typical dry fly water is still around if you know were to find it. In general, at these flows nymph fishing will remain the best way to consistently find fish. With PMD’s, green drakes, caddis, yellow sallies, BWO’s and midges all in the system, these fish could be keyed in on any one of them any given day.

The difference between the Little Truckee and the main river would be that on the LT you need to have an accurate imitation of the bug if you want to be in the game. Light tippet (think 5x for nymphing) and a good presentation doesn’t hurt either. For those of you who are only able to get out in the afternoon, this tailwater would be a great option for you, as it fishes well all day, every day. Being that it is the height of summer, this river will most certainly be very busy and busier than a lot of people will like if you go out during peak times, I.E. mid-day on a weekend. Please remain courteous to other anglers, giving them ample space and asking simple questions like “is it ok with you if I fish here.” This little bit of acknowledgement goes a long way. The other alternative is to fish the off hours or some of the less fished sections of river. These less-than-ideal zones can also surprise you with some nice quality fish from time to time.
