With the looming tournament against El Dorado Bass, I knew I needed to get out and get some practice in on Lake Oroville. Being that there are 3 major arms to the lake I spent 3 days there focusing on a specific area of the lake each day trying to locate bait, schools of fish and what types of areas the schools of fish were relating to. The vast majority of the lake was sitting at 74-77 degrees with a visibility of 10-15 feet in most places, with the occasional spot being more or less. Across the three days, the reaction bite was amazing using bait colored crank baits and even some spinner bait bites. If you choose to slow down and drag jigs or worms, they were also getting bit. The top water bite is still there, but the bite was very specific. You needed to be close up on steep rocky banks with deep water. The shallower banks weren’t as productive. I found the best bite to be between 12ft-20ft when just cruising down the typical bank. Main lake points are still holding bait, and the fish are schooled up, hitting those bait balls. When you find them schooled up, if you start getting fewer bites or no bites, don’t be afraid to turn around and go the other way from the point you started at. The big schools aren’t moving far from where you find them.
