On January  30, 2025, Paul Clouse and Al Hurwitz were joined by Roman Shvets for a day of trolling on Los Vaqueros Reservoir (LVR). After a slow start, we caught eight Rainbow Trout and had another 6-8 strikes that didn’t stay pinned. The fish caught were a mixture of DFG and Mt. Lassen Rainows, ranging in size from 3/4 pound to the largest Lassen weighing 2.7 pounds. All of the fish were caught in Howden Cove just below the surface in very shallow (less than 15 foot) water columns. Lures included Jointed J-9 Rapalas, a Rapala Husky Jerk, and a variety of chrome colored spoons. We applied plenty of scent to the lures, and trolled at a speed of 2.2-2.3 mph. Water clarity was excellent, with a surface temperature around 53.5 degrees. We fished both Cox and East Coves, but could not induce bites at either spot.

Pictured here are Al, Roman (red cap), and Paul with a variety of catches, including Paul holding the 2.7 pound Mt. Lassen Trout. All of the fish were released.
A very good day. We’ll be back soon!

All the best,
Paul Clouse, Lafayette
Dr. Al Hurwitz, Saratoga
Roman Shvets, Roseville
