The Flows on the Little Truckee remain high and tough to fish. They have kept releases out of Stampede at around 480 CFS for around 3 weeks now. While the fish have certainly settled into these flows and found some areas to get out of the brunt of the current, these pockets will be few and far between and at times tough to get to. With the high water, the dry fly fishing will be very limited except maybe a few wide runs able to still provide slow enough water for the trout to leisurely sip dries.
The best way to fish this river at these flows is using an indicator with a good amount of weight above your first bug. This allows you to be able to reach spots a bit further out that you can’t wade out to. The euro rod is still certainly in play and will still be preferred for picking apart runs close to shore but may be a bit more limiting when fishing further away. The few small advantages of fishing out here right now would be you can fish larger, flashier flies and use heavier tippet. The main bugs out here right now would be worms, stoneflies, PMD’s, midges and BWO’s. This is also a good opportunity to throw streamers on a river that is typically know for small flies and 7x tippet.
