August on the Metolius has settled into a classic summer rhythm—warm days, cool mornings, and steady insect activity. PMD and caddis hatches are consistent from midday through evening, with Golden Stones and Little Olive Stones also in the mix. Dry-dropper setups and precise nymphing remain reliable throughout the day, especially in riffles and seams. For those chasing bigger fish, now is a prime window to target bull trout. Swing or strip articulated streamers through deeper canyon slots and along undercut banks during low-light periods for your best shot. Nymphs in stonefly, mayfly, and caddis varieties continue to produce, and with bull trout numbers building as fish move up from Lake Billy Chinook, this is an excellent time to cover multiple tactics in a single outing.
