We Are In For More Hot Weather
Trinity River - Willow Creek Weir - Willow Creek, CA (Humboldt County)

We are in for some more HOT weather. Monday is predicted to be 101 and then start to cool down. That is the predicted weather for the coming week. I hope that is correct as we can use come cooler weather. The hot weather is great for sunbathing and swimming but lousy for fishing. We are close to reaching summer water flows and will need cooler weather to help the fish migrate down river and then up river to spawn.
I have seen very little fishing happening on the river the past week. I inspected the new Junction City launching area and it isn’t completed yet. It is ok but it will need more work in order for it to withstand high winter flows. The parking is to be expanded and graveled later in the constructed. One thing I noticed was that just below the launching ramp was some steel plates to help the heavy equipment cross the river. When the flows drop to 400cfs it will be pretty shallow there. This is great for the equipment to cross but I don’t believe the fish will want to cross over the steel plates come time for them to migrate up river. If this happens the upper river spawning areas are going to become very slim. Also, the hatchery may receive less returns which would hurt the egg collection. I hope not! If this were to happen the TRH would possibly not reach the required number of eggs needed for the spring releases. CDFW will have to keep a close eye on that area.
Lewiston Lake: Louise said that the fly fishes are doing best with Midges under an indicator. Fishing Nymphs and Wooley Buggers are also having success; bait guys are having good success with night crawlers or orange trout bait without glitter; the hardware guys are doing best with gold or orange lures. She also said the she didn’t see a lot of limits come in but most everybody had some fish. That sounds like one of the better places to fish right now. You can contact the Pine Cove Marina and ask Louise or Matt (530)778-3878) for Lewiston Lake fishing; for the Upper Trinity River you can call Indian Creek Lodge, Andy or Hannah, (530)623-6294), Junction City Store, Butch, (530)623-2803.
Willow Creek: Willow Creek and Big Rock areas are being hit pretty hard by the swimmers and sunbathers right now so I don’t recommend trying to fish those areas for the weekends. I really have not seen many fishermen out fishing the lower river because of the heat. The WC Weir should be installed and operating towards the end of the end of the month.
The Evans Bar weir has started to send out their trapping results so I will be posting their results beginning next week. Mid-Klamath to Happy Camp: The Klamath River at Weitchpec is flowing 3,056cfs. This is a decrease of 208cfs. The Iron Gate/Bogus Creek area is flowing 927cfs a decrease of 33cfs from the last report. To get the latest fishing information I suggest you call Marble Mountain Guest Ranch (800) 522-6284, or Scott Caldwell, SC Guide Service (530)905-0758 to get proper fishing information to fish the Upper Klamath.
