The daily thunderstorms kept us a bit on our toes this week. We saw an overall dip in water temp, but they were certainly all over the place and still warmer than expected. Most of the days the rain did little to change flows on the Truckee. Other days, we saw a huge short-lived spike from very localized rain events, which even caused mudslides on the interstate! You can imagine what it did to the river. 

As of today we are still seeing some turbidity in the water, but beautiful sunny days are expected for the rest of the week. We'd expect the Truckee run clear again as soon as this weekend. We would also expect water temps to be on the rise again, and anglers should continue to carry thermometers with them if they fish anytime in the afternoons. 

Remember, 68 degrees is the cut off, and it’s not a bad idea to even call it a few degrees before that! This will still be pertinent along the upper section of river in particular. If fishing above the Boca confluence, fish the mornings. 

With the thunderstorms putting some color in the river, using larger attractor flies like stoneflies, crawdads, and worms will be good bets right now. Don’t forget the worms - seriously! For your smaller flies, quick sinking and flashy. Perdigons, blowtorches, rainbow warriors and the likes, will get it done right now. The fish are still sitting in the faster water, so continue to put most of your focus on riffles, pocket water and the heads of runs until water temps drop further.
