Current Water Conditions

Flows on the Truckee River have settled nicely this week—holding around 76 CFS out of Tahoe City, 78 CFS through town, and 459 CFS at Farad. With lower upper flows, more trout are shifting toward the canyon stretch, which has been producing consistent action, especially during early mornings before the sun reaches the water. Weekday angler pressure remains light, providing plenty of room to explore and cover water.

Water Temperatures

With cool fall weather taking hold, temperatures are steady in the mid 50s, averaging around 56 degrees all day.

Hatches

Expect a mix of blue-winged olives and midges hatching throughout the day. The biggest hatch being Blue-Winged Olives.

Effective Tactics

Tightline nymphing through riffles and seams is producing well. Dry-dropper rigs with long leaders also perform in mixed currents. Use lighter tippet and a 10-foot rod to control drifts in these lower flows. Browns are hugging structure, while rainbows are active in riffles and runs.

Catch Report

Anglers are landing plenty of rainbows and browns in the 12–16 inch class from Glenshire through Hirschdale. Bigger browns up to 24 inches are coming out of the deeper canyon pools. The best bite remains early and late in the day.
