The Fishing on the Truckee has been really great this week, with the temps on the river in their ideal range and the flows very stable. This, and the mild weather has made for excellent conditions for both the trout and the angler; an often small section of the fishing Venn diagram. This will change a bit this week with rain/snow mix in the forecast. We will likely see flows come up a bit, diminished water clarity, and lower water temps. The first two will probably be short lived, but dropping water temps is inevitable however.

 

Even as winter creeps in, the fishing on the Truckee will still be good. It will just change to shorter windows of actively feeding fish, and indicator fishing being the best as fish push into the slowest water they can find. We still have a few good weeks of fishing to look forward to here on the California side, and pretty much the entire winter on the Nevada side. Here at the shop we do genuinely look forward to the wintertime on the Truckee, with large, colored up fish, and the lightest angling pressure of the year. The bugs this week are much the same as the weeks prior, and won’t change for several months, as summer hatches subside and the small bugs of winter, baetis and midges, become the main forage. With the rain expected this week, the larger attractors that we’ve been fishing with mixed success over the last few weeks should become far more effective as flows come up and the water gets a tint to it. Stones, worms, eggs and maybe even some crawdads should be in this week’s rotation, especially if fishing anywhere from the Boca confluence down, where the river is larger.
