Some of the best fishing happens right before a storm system blows in, and that’s great news for anyone hoping to try their luck for some trout this weekend!
Floating baits are the number one way to hook up right now. Inflated nightcrawlers are outshining most other options, but micetails and Zeke’s/Powerbait combos are doing the trick, too. Rig them up Carolina style on a fairly short leader. If the sun’s still out, make a very short cast, but once the clouds roll in you may need to chuck it out a bit further.
Spoons, spinners, mini jigs, dropshots, and the like are all getting bit as well. Just be sure to work them low and slow. The water is still very cold.
If fly fishing is more your style, you’re in luck! Hang a leech or a midge under a strike indicator and hang on. If you’d rather not watch a bobber, try slow stripping a woolly bugger or other streamer instead.
Most of the success is happening east of the observatory, but positive reports are also coming in from Windy Point all the way down to the red house. So find yourself a spot somewhere along the north shore, and take advantage of the pre-frontal conditions this weekend.
