The Truckee was affected very little by this week’s weather in terms of increased flows. In fact, the flows out of Boca Reservoir dropped this week, bringing the Farad gauge down from 1,200 CFS, to around 800. The main effect of the storm was the decrease in water temps, cooling back down into the mid-40’s for a short period. Expect fish to be holding in various water types right now, this is a good time of year to “fish it all”. If it looks like water you’ve caught fish out of in the past, it’s likely holding a fish or two. The variety of bugs present have most of the trout less selective than normal. General attractor nymphs are continuing to provide the best results. We have seen more of the typical summer bugs really kick off this week with PMDs taking over as the main mayfly, so be sure to have plenty of these patterns in all life stages for the coming months. For suggestions on specific patterns for the week, refer to our “Suggested flies for the Truckee River” column located below, we just updated it and everything listed has been putting fish in the net for us recently. As the fish begin to sit in faster water in recent weeks, using the euro rod will become increasingly effective but indicators, dries, dry droppers, and streamers are all working to a degree, so this is a super fun time of year to mix it up and fish however you’d like.
