After a long hard fight, stocks of swordfish have almost been rebuilt, according to the IGFA's current issue of International Angler.
Two more factoids of interest there: After taxonomic changes, black marlin are now under a different genus (Istiompax) than blue marlin (Makaira). Both are family members of the billfishes, (Istiophoridae). Swordfish can see better at great depths because they can keep their brains and eyes warmer than the water where they're swimming. Dr. Barbara Block of Stanford University tracks bluefin and yellowfin tuna with a tagging program from facilities
