Red Rooster III returned June 17 from a four-day freelance trip with skipper Julio Ochoa at the helm. He wrote that the bluefin he saw on his way south wouldn't cooperate. His anglers found a good catch of yellowtail at the islands.

Pete Polusky of Foothill Ranch won first place for a 31-pound forktail that made an error when it mistook his green Salas 6X Jr. jig for a piece of bait. He said he fished with 40-pound Izorline on an Accurate 665 H reel and a Calstar 700 M rod to beat the fish in 15 minutes.

Bob Delgado of Murietta was second, for a 27.5-pounder, and Jerry Sutton of Riverside was third, for a 26.8-pound yellowtail.

David Low of Martinez caught a 10.3-pound whitefish, one of the largest seen in many years, on a sardine-colored Fish Trap plastic swim bait.
