Current River Conditions: Water conditions just don't get any better. Although good reports are still coming out of the Klamath, we expect the steelhead fishing to really slow down any day. After all, it is the end of the season. We are looking forward to late May and early June for the Salmon Fly hatches that produce the top water, dry fly fishing this river is famous for in late spring. No big changes for the fly selection for this week. Good flies to throw include Shafer's 3-D, Pat's Rubber Legs, #12-14 Prince Nymphs, Shrimp Pink Micro Spawns and a selection of Boles Bazookas. Red Copper Johns also! Contact us about the Klamath River or call 800-669-3474. The Fly Shop's?? Tips: The most productive method for getting tight to adult steelhead on this river, in respect to the upper sections near Hornbrook, CA., is suspending nymphs and eggs under an indicator. Use 2x-3x leader and AB or AA split shot. Fish at depth between 5-7 ft. You might consider fishing deeper and heavier the further down stream you venture during winter months. Fly rods from 6wt to 7wt are perfect in lengths of 9' to 9'.5. Switch rods are popular and make casting very easy. Spey rods fit in well on the Klamath river. Look for steelhead in the pools and shallow tailouts. Road Conditions: No restrictions at this time. Call 1-800.427.7623 for up to date Northern California Road Conditions. Here's a link to Cal-Trans Road Conditions: Click Here. River Fact: The Klamath river is 263 miles long, originating in a broad valley at the eastern slope of the southern High Cascades, the water source is Upper Klamath Lake. Sometimes called "the upside down river", the upper Klamath in Oregon is largely developed, but the lower Klamath is still wild, forested and ruggedly beautiful. Next to the Klamath, the only river that originates in a desert and flows into the coastal forests of the pacific west is the Pit River.
