The Callibaetis hatch at Baum Lake is sporadic & the weeds are making fishing difficult

Current Lake Conditions: Sometimes, Callibaetis hatches happen mid day and a few fish can be found feeding off the surface eating duns and emergers. You will find some sections of the lake are weedy. Too weedy in fact. The weeds get thick by mid summer and that does limit fishable water. But, there's plenty of fishable water holding rainbows and sometimes a brown trout ot two. Best fishing is found along the deeper sections of the lake. Baum lake has a lot of rainbow trout in it and cold clean water makes for healthy conditions all adding up to what is a great choice for a day of fly fishing, any day. Best flies can be nymphs suspended under small indicators. The associated nymph section to the right lists a number of solid possibilities. Grab a few and go!
The Fly Shop's?? Tips: Fish midges all day! Look for occasional hatches of BWO's and PMD's that produce surface feeding and dry fly opportunities before the sun...get's high. In the sky! Seriously! Stripping and retrieving Leeches on intermediate sinking lines is a great tactic as is suspending #22 black Zebra Midges or Mercer's Gidget under a small indicator. Try a black A.P. on a slow retrieve. There are a lot of scuds in Baum Lake, making various scud patterns an obvious choice. Suggested leader selection consists of 9' 5x and a spool of 6X tippet for dry flies and the smallest nymphs.
Baum Lake is an ideal fishing destination for pontoon boats, float tubes and small prams.
Fishing an Intermediate sinking line with a small PT nymph can produce a bent fly rod. The key is SLOW strips! Nothing in Baum Lake is moving fast. Use lighter, longer leaders. Delicate dry-fly presentations will produce more strikes.

for Friday, August 23rd, 2013Hat Creek: Fishing conditions are good and we expect steady reports out of Hat Creek through August.
Klamath River - Upper - CA: The water is warm on the Klamath, which means that the fishing is difficult. Think Autumn!
Sacramento River: The Lower Sac bite gets going in the late morning, lasting through the afternoon
McCloud River: The McCloud is fishing great! Look for dry fly fishing to happen in the AM hours
Pit River: Fly fishing on the Pit has been great. Daytime temps are perfect for fly fishing the Pit in August
Trinity River: The planned water releases for the Trinity River have been put on hold
Sacramento River: Fishing on the Upper Sac has been best in the early AM hours, tapereing off mid day

for Saturday, August 10th, 2013Hat Creek: Fishing conditions are good and we expect steady reports out of Hat Creek thru August
Klamath River - Upper - CA: We expect the fishing on the Klamath to really pick up in September
Sacramento River: Expect some amazing fishing on the Lower Sac during August & September as the flows drop below 12k
McCloud River: Fishing on the McCloud River is very good right now for both Dries & Nymphs
Pit River: This has been a great week to be out on the Pit River
Trinity River: The flows on the Trinity River will be adjusted to keep the water cold for the Salmon
Sacramento River: Fishing on the Upper Sac has been best in the early AM hours, tapereing off mid day.
Baum Lake: Baum Lake is a great choice for a day of fly fishing
Iron Canyon Reservoir: Best fishing at Iron Canyon happens in the early AM hours. Once the sun is high, it's over.
Keswick Reservoir: Fishing at Keswick Reservoir is fair. Fishing is best in the mornings.
McCumber Reservoir: McCumber fishing has been tough due to the warm summer days
Lewiston Lake: Good fishing is still happening at Lewiston Lake, & it will continue through the summer!
Manzanita Lake: Best fishing at Manzanita Lake happens for those who are on the water early in the day.
