Roy Rose took his 36 anglers aboard Royal Polaris on a six-day trip to Guadalupe Island and then into the beach for some rockfishing. He docked the rig at Fisherman's Landing September 13, with a nice catch.
Tom Thompson of San Antonio, TX won first place with a 110-pound yellowfin that bit on a sardine. It was his best tuna ever, said Tom, and the second fish on the boat. He hauled it in after a 30-minute fight, on a 3/0 Mutu ringed hook, 40-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon leader tied to 80-pound Spectra backing on an Okuma 10 reel and a Calstar 765 L rod.
Bob Kammerer of La Quinta was second for an 83-pounder, and James Lee won third place for an 80-pound yellowfin tuna.
Scott Iverson of Long Beach needed a little help from his pal Ed Rudolph of Lakewood to show off a brace of 37-pound yellowtail.
