Forsyth Reservoir - Loa, UT

Lake Information

Fish Species: Cutthroat Trout, Tiger Trout, Splake
Forsyth Reservoir, near Loa in Utah’s Fishlake National Forest, is a high-mountain fishery known for its thriving populations of tiger trout and splake. Located at 8,800 feet, the 165-acre reservoir offers excellent coldwater fishing with dramatic scenery and easy access.

Tiger trout and splake dominate the catch and respond aggressively to deep-diving crankbaits, spoons, and soft plastics. Fly anglers do well with streamers and woolly buggers fished near drop-offs, especially early and late in the day. Fish often key on Utah chub, which are abundant and serve as a primary forage species.

Bank fishing is productive along the dam and accessible shorelines, while float tubes and small boats improve access to deeper structure. There is a nearby Forest Service campground and roadside parking for day-use anglers.

Fishing is best from late May through November. Ice fishing is possible but less common due to access and elevation. The Utah DWR monitors the fishery closely and occasionally implements management strategies to balance predator-prey dynamics.

Standard trout regulations usually apply, though anglers should consult the Utah Fishing Guidebook before visiting. Forsyth Reservoir offers a rewarding alternative to more crowded lakes and provides consistent action for anglers pursuing big, aggressive trout in a serene alpine setting.
