Grassy Lake - Ephraim , UT

Lake Information

Fish Species: Rainbow Trout, Tiger Trout
Grassy Lake, located in Utah’s Manti-La Sal National Forest near Ephraim, is a small alpine reservoir offering a peaceful trout fishing experience. Positioned at nearly 9,000 feet elevation, this off-grid lake is stocked with rainbow trout by the Utah DWR and also supports a naturally sustaining brook trout population.

Due to limited shoreline access and brushy terrain, float tubes or wading are often more effective than bank fishing. Small spinners, spoons, and PowerBait work well for rainbow trout, while fly anglers find success with attractor dries, beetles, and woolly buggers.

Access requires a high-clearance vehicle via seasonal forest roads, typically open from late June through October. Primitive camping is available, but no formal facilities exist—anglers must come self-contained and prepared for fast-changing mountain weather.

The trout here are often more willing to strike due to the lake’s light fishing pressure. Early mornings and evenings tend to be the most productive times. Review the Utah Fishing Guidebook for current regulations—Grassy Lake usually adheres to general trout limits.

Grassy Lake is ideal for those seeking solitude, crisp mountain air, and rewarding trout action away from the crowds. It’s a perfect fit for backcountry anglers exploring the Ephraim Canyon area or Skyline Drive trailheads.
