Monticello Lake - Monticello, UT

Lake Information

Fish Species: Rainbow Trout
Monticello Lake is a small alpine fishery located in the Abajo Mountains west of Monticello. This coldwater reservoir is stocked with rainbow trout each spring and summer, with fish typically measuring 10–14 inches. Trout respond well to bait such as worms and PowerBait, as well as small spinners. Fly anglers do well with woolly buggers and midges, especially in early morning or evening hours.

Tiger trout have also been introduced and offer more aggressive action. Look for them near structure using streamers, spoons, or jigs.

Monticello Lake is remote and peaceful, with walk-in shoreline access and permission for float tubes or small craft. It’s usually snowed in until late May, with the best fishing occurring in early summer. Camping is available nearby, but services are minimal.

Anglers should follow the statewide limit of four trout per day, as outlined in the Utah Fishing Guidebook. The lake is a quiet, rewarding place for anglers looking to escape the heat and catch trout in a pristine mountain setting.
