Huntington Reservoir (Mammoth Reservoir), east of Fairview, is a premier trophy trout destination situated at over 9,300 feet in Utah’s Manti-La Sal National Forest. This alpine fishery is managed with special regulations to support populations of large tiger trout and splake, both known for their size and aggressive behavior.
Only artificial flies and lures are permitted, and anglers should review the Utah Fishing Guidebook for up-to-date harvest restrictions. The reservoir is ideal for fly fishers using streamers and sinking lines or spin anglers casting jigs and spoons. Large fish over 20 inches are common, particularly in deeper water near structure.
Float tubes and pontoon boats significantly improve access and success, although bank fishing near the dam and inlet can be productive. The reservoir is typically fishable from late June through fall, with access limited during snow season. Winter ice fishing is possible when conditions are safe.
Camping is available nearby, making Huntington an excellent location for extended trips. This lake attracts experienced anglers seeking quality over quantity, and its cool, clear waters reward patience and persistence.
Huntington Reservoir remains one of Utah’s most productive alpine trophy fisheries, offering both scenic beauty and a genuine chance to land a fish of a lifetime in a wild and quiet setting.
