The Little Truckee saw a small drop in flows this week and as of today it dropped from 1,000 CFS to +/- 780 CFS. This won’t change much in terms of opening more holding water, but if nothing else it’s hopefully an indicator of the downward trend of spring runoff. At 780 CFS this river will still contain limited holding water, and with as popular as this river is, these runs will likely be pretty jammed up with other anglers. We encourage you to try some of the other sections or river such as the lower section from the Boca confluence up to the meadow. You may not find as many fish here, but if you’re willing to walk and cover water, there are going to be a handful of soft spots along the banks or in areas that are typically too shallow. These runs can contain some fish that are less pressured. The odds of seeing any dry fly fishing during the high waters of spring are low, but it is the Little Truckee and you never know when you may see a hatch of PMD’s or midges. Be prepared with a few dries in case. The best bet for finding fish on top will be fishing the inlet, however this has been a very popular spot with the weekend crowd and fishing guides alike. The best bet when fishing here will be to get out on a boat or float tube and fish outside of the reach of shore anglers using midges or balanced leeches under an indicator, dry flies imitating midges, PMD’s or BWO’s or stripping streamers with an intermediate sinking line.
